About Calyx

Calyx is a modern home for the listings of the Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory (coffeeshopdirect.com), which has documented the Dutch coffeeshop scene continuously since 1998. The archive spans 1,901 shops — 802 currently open, the rest kept as a historical record of a scene that has been steadily shrinking for two decades.

A coffeeshop, in the Dutch sense, is a licensed establishment permitted to sell up to five grams of cannabis per person per day to adults 18 and over under the country's tolerance policy (gedoogbeleid). The directory also tracks the wider ecosystem: smartshops, growshops, headshops, seed shops, smoker-friendly bars and museums.

Listings include addresses, opening hours, contact details, founding dates, 6,451 visitor reviews submitted over 25+ years, and dated price menus courtesy of the FBN/coffeeshopmenus.org community. Menu sightings feed a cross-referenced strain catalogue — thousands of weed and hash varieties with average prices and where to find them today — and the directory also covers Barcelona's private cannabis social clubs, a very different legal model from the Dutch coffeeshop.

Rules for visitors change by municipality — some cities enforce residency requirements (the ingezetenencriterium), and tobacco is banned indoors everywhere. Check current local rules before travelling. Nothing here is legal advice.
